Epoxy Coated Steel Rebar

Epoxy-coated reinforcing steel bar was first used in a bridge in West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania in 1973. Four spans of this bridge were constructed with epoxy-coated steel reinforcing bars (rebar).

Epoxy-Coated steel reinforcing bar should be handled to ensure that it is not damaged prior to or during concrete placement. epoxy coated steel rebar should be wrapped with plastic film which is anti UV irradiation.in the process of handling or stacking, back-up plate should be placed in the region of contact area. When placed in bundles, coating reinforced bars should be separated with the ground and bundles also should be separated.in bundles should not stack more than five layers.

Epoxy coated rebar as a green rebar, it is used in concrete subjected to corrosive conditions. These may include exposure to deicing salts or marine environments. Epoxy coated steel rebar is used for Bridges, Parking structures, Pavement, Marine structures, Repair works.

Epoxy coated steel rebar is used instead of conventional reinforcing bars to strength the concrete and protect against corrosion. The epoxy coating is applied in a factory to the steel prior to shipping to ensure corrosion resistance. Epoxy-coated steel reinforcing bars (rebar) may be used in any concrete subjected to corrosive conditions.

There are different types of Epoxy Coated bar available where we mostly used Epoxy Coated Steel rebar, Epoxy Coated Steel Dowel bar.

Advantages of Epoxy coating

Epoxy coated rebar is designed to protect the rebar against rust and corrosion. Applying an epoxy coating to steel rebar prevents oxygen and chlorides from reaching the steel surface reducing corrosion. Environmentally friendly materials - Unlike many paints, the fusion-bonded epoxy coatings used for steel reinforcement do not contain appreciable solvents or other environmentally hazardous substances.

Disadvantages of Epoxy coating

ECR requires delicate handling to prevent damage to the epoxy coating. Any damage to the coating prior to placement will compromise the corrosion protection. Special handling must be used at the fabrication plant, in transit to the site and during handling and storage to the site. It is essential that damage to the coating is minimized. UV damage, Coating inconsistencies, Abrasion resistance, Poor bond to concrete, Installation conditions, Increased corrosion process.

Following measures shall be adopted instead of using epoxy coated rebar for avoiding corrosion.

Cement shall be Sulphate resistant cement.
Applying protective coating for the Horizontal and vertical concrete faces underground exposed to soil.
Minimum thickness of the Blinding concrete below foundations shall be 100 mm.
Quality concreting and consolidation procedures.
